Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : Proper and right attitude would help students in taking up meaningful ways in their process of learning, leading to the fullest assimilation of the information that is learnt. Educationists always find a one to one relation between academic achievement and attitude of the learners. Academic achievement is related to the acquisition of principles and generalizations and the capacity to perform efficiently certain manipulations of objects, symbols and ideas. Assessment of academic performance has been largely confined to the evaluation in terms of information, knowledge and understanding. There are some other aspects that are to be measured during assessment. For example, the learners must acquire the ability to see the relationship of them to the learning environment and adjusting to it through interests and right attitude. Any material learned with proper interest and right attitude will help every learner to reach great heights in their academic pursuits. The intention of the present investigation is to study the relation between achievement in computer science and the students? attitude towards computer. To accomplish the intension of the study, the investigators have constructed and validated a tool named Achievement Test in Computer Science for Standard XI students and used Dr. Kumaran and Dr. Selvaraj?s tool to study the students? attitude towards computer. The relation between the academic achievement and students? attitude towards computer was found using Pearson?s product moment formula. |

THE HIGH DEMAND OF CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION AND EDUCATION POLICY AS AN AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT |
Author : K. T. KAMALUDHEEN |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : We recognize that climate change poses the greatest crisis facing the world today and it reverses the progress of all countries in meeting their national goals. Climate change affected every human being on the planet and as it is the key causative factor in increased heat waves, flooding, droughts, intense tropical cyclones, rising sea levels and loss of biodiversity, we will have to face widespread effects on human life and natural systems in the future. In this critical juncture, our educational system cannot be a mere spectator, but we must have a clear education agenda in climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, which require learning new knowledge and skills and changing behaviours in order to reduce the vulnerabilities and manage the risks of climate change. Thus this paper argues that investing in quality education to combat climate change is an essential tool in achieving sustainability. There should not be a decision making paralysis in this urgent need any more. At present, there is no coherent dialogue even on how to expand the climate change agenda to include education as a tool in adaptation and mitigation strategies. We know that children are powerful agents of change and research has shown that providing them with empowering and relevant education on disasters and climate change in a nurturing school environment can reduce their own and the community’s vulnerability to risk and contribute to sustainable development. In short, despite being threatened by climate change, the education sector offers an opportunity to combat climate change through contributing to mitigation efforts and enhancing the adaptive capacity of education systems and learners, thereby reducing vulnerabilities and building resilient societies. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : Computer plays the main role in self-learning activities of the students nowadays, because students gather more information from internet and digital library. So the students are in a need of self-efficacy to utilize the computers. Compeau and Higgins (1995) defined computer self-efficacy as a judgement of one?s capability to use a computer. Normative survey method has been used in the present investigation. Random sampling technique has been used in the selection of the sample of as many as 300 students studying in higher secondary schools situated in the Kumbakonam taluk of Thanjavur district, Tamilnadu, India. Computer self-efficacy scale (CSES) constructed and validated by Murphy, CA., et al., (1989) has been used in the present investigation. The findings of the study shows that majority of the higher secondary students were having a high level of the computer self-efficacy. Also, there is a significant difference in computer self-efficacy between the higher secondary students studying in the (i) boys school and girls school, (ii) boys school and co-education schools and (iii) girls school and co-education schools |

Due to the advantages in the computers students felt depressed when it is not available. Usage of computer reduces their imagination, creativity and memory power. Due to this addiction on computers, students? mental growth is affected. Hence this disorder has been noted as the mania and the students in the adolescent stage were affected mostly. Hence the investigator tends to study the higher secondary students computer mania. For this investigation the normative survey method was used. The computer mania scale (CMS) constructed and validated by the investigators was used in the investigation and as many as 878 higher secondary students selected by the random sampling techniques were considered as the sample for the investigation. The hypotheses framed from the formulated objectives were tested („t?-test) at the 0.05 level of significance and the findings of the study reveals that the higher secondary students shows a low level of computer mania and also the higher secondary students (i) sex, (ii) their residential area and (iii) possessing own computer shows no significant difference and the higher secondary students (i) locality of the schools, (ii) medium of study and (iii) group they belong shows a significant difference in respect of their computer mania. |
